Helen Cross, Jeweller sitting at her jewellers bench making jewellery

Hello, I'm Helen Cross, an Artist and Jewellery Designer based in the heart of Norfolk, UK. My work is inspired by the Norfolk countryside and its rich architectural heritage.

My sculptural contemporary jewellery is inspired by Norfolk, an area in the East of England made up of gently rolling fields, woodlands and waterscapes, edged by the sea and wrapped in open skies. My designs capture the calm and tranquillity of the countryside and its built forms in pieces of sculptural jewellery that can be enjoyed every day and which connect the wearer to Norfolk, always. My jewellery practice is supported by the creating of photographic images detailing the inspiration for my pieces and providing a baseline reference point for the translation of the form into metal.

I make all my jewellery by hand in my tiny Norfolk studio, working with traditional hand tools. I begin each piece of jewellery with either flat sterling silver sheet or wire which I shape and form to create my 3D designs. Some of my designs are textured, some are shaped with hammers and others are pierced with a jewellers saw to cut out a design in the metal. In every piece I try to translate the sculptural forms which inspire me onto metal, capturing an essence of the of a place in it's simplest from. I focus on creating strong minimalist forms evoking a particular place and time which are infinitely wearable and tactile.

If you'd like to find out more about how I have evolved my practice and the inspiration for my designs you can read about my journey in my blog, it's called Dumpling - A Norfolk Creative life, you'll find it here.
